BOE Committee Approves Increase in Charter Schools Budget

The Board of Education Committee on Budget and Fiscal Accountability approved the charter schools operating budget for Fiscal Biennium 2007-09 during its meeting this afternoon.

The committee-approved budget would result in an increase of over $1,000 more per pupil for Fiscal Year 2007-08 and 2008-09, compared to the Board’s approved budget for Fiscal Year 2006-07.

The proposed budget will be considered for approval by the full Board at its general business meeting on October 19.

Budget Committee Chairperson Garrett Toguchi stated his support for the charter schools and his hope that the increase of more than $20 million over the biennium will assist the charter schools in continuing to increase their performance.

Toguchi noted that the budget approved by the committee also provides funding for three additional start-up charter schools and additional substitute teacher costs.
